Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

What are platelets?

Platelets are blood cells that do a lot of different things in the body. A clot is one of their main jobs, so a person doesn’t bleed to death. There are proteins in platelets that can help the body heal, but there are also other proteins in platelets

What is platelet rich plasma?

In order to make platelet-rich plasma (PRP), you have to take out all of the red cells from whole blood and separate out the platelets that are in it. In this case, a patient’s blood is taken, spun down, and then sent to a lab for analysis. The red blood cells are taken out with a pipette and thrown away.

It is called PRP, and it is made up of platelets and proteins that can be used to help heal and treat areas of inflammation in the body.

It is called PRP, and it is made up of platelets and proteins that can be used to help heal and treat areas of inflammation in the body.

How does it work?

PRP therapy works by taking advantage of the body’s natural ability to repair and grow new tissues. Finally, PRP therapy is a safe and effective treatment that has many benefits for patients.

The first step in the process is to get blood from the person. A centrifuge is used to separate the platelets from other parts of your blood, like red and white blood cells.

What is left after centrifugation are plasma cells that are rich in platelets. These cells are then injected back into the patient.

It only lasts a short time and doesn’t hurt at all. Within a few days, new collagen starts to form, and the treated area starts to heal itself. Growth factors in PRP help stem cells in hair follicles grow new hair and stop hair loss. Because the treatment also brings in a lot of new blood flow to the area, it helps with tissue and muscle repair.

What common conditions can be treated with PRP

Researchers are trying out PRP injections across a number of applications. Examples of these include:

Hair loss

Doctors have injected PRP into the scalp to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. According to research from 2014, PRP injections are effective in treating androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness.

Tendon injuries

Tendons connect muscle to bone. They heal slowly after damage. PRP injections have been used to treat chronic tendon issues like tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, and jumper’s knee (patellar tendon pain).

Acute injuries

Doctors have used PRP injections to treat acute sports injuries, such as pulled hamstring muscles or knee sprains.

Postsurgical repair

Sometimes doctors use PRP injections after surgery to repair a torn tendon (such as a rotator cuff tendon in the shoulder) or ligaments (such as the anterior cruciate ligament).

Osteoarthritis

How might PRP knee injections help osteoarthritis patients? In 2015, PRP injections outperformed hyaluronic acid injections in treating osteoarthritis. The study’s 160 participants is too small to be confident.

What are the potential side effects of PRP?

Because PRP is injected into the skin, there may be negative effects.

PRP is autologous, meaning it is made from your own body. This reduces allergic reactions to other medications like cortisone or hyaluronic acid. However, there are several injection-related hazards, such as:

  • infection

  • nerve injuries

  • pain at the injection site

  • tissue damage

Excellent care, from the person at the front desk (very pleasant to all who were checking in, including myself), to my masseuse (Kathleen?) who had already read my intake form and asked clarifying questions as it was my first visit. She covered all area I had mentioned. I went here because it was on my insurance company’s list of cover d providers, and I’m glad I did.

I had my first massage with Heather and it was one of the best massages I’ve had! She worked through the knots on my neck and shoulders. The bed was heated and it went low enough for me to get on East (I’m 5’ tall). I also see Kathleen regularly and I love her! She uses lavender which I love. Sometime I feel chatty and we have the same vibe. Highly recommend them!

Most in depth chiropractic experience I've ever had. The focus isn't just on getting the cracks, but more of a holistic approach. We did some lazer therapy and after each session they would have me lay on a "bed" of ice or heat while a machine rolled my back out. It was great. The whole office staff is very nice and they ladies at the front always remembered my name when I walked it. 10/10 experience.

I had just gotten off the plane from the East Coast. I was in so much pain with Siatica. I called this office and they got me right in. Dr. Peter worked on me and was very thorough. I was able to enjoy my week with my son with little to no pain. I would highly recommend In Touch Chiropractic to everyone! The office is super friendly and better than anyone I have seen on the East Coast. Definitely the place to go if you’re in pain like I was!
