CHIROPRACTIC CARE AFTER A DISC INJURY
A disc injury can make normal movements such as bending, standing, walking, or turning your head painful and difficult. While the disc itself heals gradually over time, reduced movement, muscle guarding, and joint stiffness can contribute to ongoing pain and disability. The goal of conservative care is to improve function, reduce pain, and help patients return safely to their normal activities.
Key Insight:
Research shows that most people with disc injuries improve with conservative treatment and do not require surgery. Chiropractic care can be an appropriate part of that treatment plan for many patients, depending on the type and severity of the disc injury and the results of a comprehensive examination.
Following a disc injury, the joints above and below the affected level often become stiff while surrounding muscles tighten to protect the injured area. This protective response can reduce spinal mobility and alter normal movement patterns, sometimes placing additional stress on other parts of the spine.
Chiropractic adjustments may help restore normal joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and improve overall movement. Treatment may also include soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercises, posture and ergonomic education, and activity modification. Exercises that improve core strength, flexibility, and spinal stability are often an important part of recovery and may help reduce the likelihood of future episodes.
Treatment is always individualized. Some patients benefit from manual therapy early in recovery, while others may initially require a greater emphasis on gentle exercises, pain management strategies, and gradual progression of activity. Your chiropractor will determine the most appropriate approach based on your symptoms, neurological examination, medical history, and imaging findings when available.
Most people are encouraged to remain as active as tolerated. Prolonged bed rest is generally not recommended, as gentle movement and progressive rehabilitation are associated with better outcomes for many patients with disc-related back or neck pain.
If you have been diagnosed with a disc injury or are experiencing persistent back or neck pain with pain radiating into an arm or leg, a comprehensive evaluation can help determine how chiropractic care can help your recovery.
