COMMON KNEE INJURIES AFTER A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION

September 12, 20262 min read

Neck and back injuries are often the first concerns after a motor vehicle collision (MVC), but the knees are another common injury. During a collision, the knees may strike the dashboard, center console, or door, or they may be injured by the force transmitted through the legs while pressing on the brake pedal. Even when there is no direct impact, the sudden forces of a collision can strain the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints of the knee.

Key Insight:

Knee pain following a motor vehicle accident can result from a variety of injuries, including ligament sprains, meniscus tears, bone bruises, tendon injuries, patellofemoral pain, and joint inflammation. In higher-energy collisions, dashboard impact may also injure the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), one of the major stabilizing ligaments of the knee.

Research supports early evaluation and conservative treatment for many musculoskeletal knee injuries. Depending on the diagnosis treatment may include, in addition to chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercise, activity modification, and rehabilitation to help reduce pain, restore mobility, improve strength, and return patients to their normal daily activities.

Every treatment plan is individualized based on the patient's symptoms, accident history, physical examination, health history, and recovery goals. The objective is to reduce pain, restore normal movement, and help patients safely return to work, recreation, and everyday activities while ensuring that more serious injuries are appropriately identified and managed.

If you've developed knee pain after a motor vehicle accident, don't assume it will resolve on its own. An early evaluation can help determine the cause of your symptoms and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

Excellent care, from the person at the front desk (very pleasant to all who were checking in, including myself), to my masseuse (Kathleen?) who had already read my intake form and asked clarifying questions as it was my first visit. She covered all area I had mentioned. I went here because it was on my insurance company’s list of cover d providers, and I’m glad I did.

I had my first massage with Heather and it was one of the best massages I’ve had! She worked through the knots on my neck and shoulders. The bed was heated and it went low enough for me to get on East (I’m 5’ tall). I also see Kathleen regularly and I love her! She uses lavender which I love. Sometime I feel chatty and we have the same vibe. Highly recommend them!

Most in depth chiropractic experience I've ever had. The focus isn't just on getting the cracks, but more of a holistic approach. We did some lazer therapy and after each session they would have me lay on a "bed" of ice or heat while a machine rolled my back out. It was great. The whole office staff is very nice and they ladies at the front always remembered my name when I walked it. 10/10 experience.

I had just gotten off the plane from the East Coast. I was in so much pain with Siatica. I called this office and they got me right in. Dr. Peter worked on me and was very thorough. I was able to enjoy my week with my son with little to no pain. I would highly recommend In Touch Chiropractic to everyone! The office is super friendly and better than anyone I have seen on the East Coast. Definitely the place to go if you’re in pain like I was!
