WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?

September 17, 20262 min read

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a direct blow to the head or a force transmitted through the body that causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. Concussions commonly occur during motor vehicle accidents, sports, falls, and other traumatic events. Not everyone who sustains a concussion loses consciousness, and symptoms may appear immediately or develop over the next several hours or days.

Key Insight:

Common symptoms of a concussion include headache, dizziness, nausea, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, sensitivity to light or noise, blurred vision, fatigue, balance problems, and feeling "foggy" or slowed down. Some people also experience neck pain because concussion and cervical spine injuries often occur together. Chiropractic care may help address associated musculoskeletal conditions. Since these conditions can produce similar symptoms, a comprehensive evaluation is important to determine the cause and identify the most appropriate treatment.

Current clinical guidelines recommend prompt assessment after a suspected concussion. Most people recover with appropriate medical management, education, and a gradual return to school, work, sports, and other daily activities. Complete bed rest is no longer routinely recommended. Instead, a period of relative physical and cognitive rest during the first 24 to 48 hours, followed by a gradual increase in activity as tolerated under the guidance of a healthcare provider, is generally advised.

Chiropractic care may help address associated musculoskeletal conditions such as neck pain, joint stiffness, muscle tension, and reduced mobility. Care is individualized and coordinated with the patient's medical team when necessary.

If you have sustained a blow to the head or were involved in a motor vehicle accident and are experiencing symptoms of a concussion, seek prompt medical evaluation. Emergency medical care is especially important if symptoms include worsening headache, repeated vomiting, increasing confusion, seizures, weakness, slurred speech, unequal pupils, or loss of consciousness.

Excellent care, from the person at the front desk (very pleasant to all who were checking in, including myself), to my masseuse (Kathleen?) who had already read my intake form and asked clarifying questions as it was my first visit. She covered all area I had mentioned. I went here because it was on my insurance company’s list of cover d providers, and I’m glad I did.

I had my first massage with Heather and it was one of the best massages I’ve had! She worked through the knots on my neck and shoulders. The bed was heated and it went low enough for me to get on East (I’m 5’ tall). I also see Kathleen regularly and I love her! She uses lavender which I love. Sometime I feel chatty and we have the same vibe. Highly recommend them!

Most in depth chiropractic experience I've ever had. The focus isn't just on getting the cracks, but more of a holistic approach. We did some lazer therapy and after each session they would have me lay on a "bed" of ice or heat while a machine rolled my back out. It was great. The whole office staff is very nice and they ladies at the front always remembered my name when I walked it. 10/10 experience.

I had just gotten off the plane from the East Coast. I was in so much pain with Siatica. I called this office and they got me right in. Dr. Peter worked on me and was very thorough. I was able to enjoy my week with my son with little to no pain. I would highly recommend In Touch Chiropractic to everyone! The office is super friendly and better than anyone I have seen on the East Coast. Definitely the place to go if you’re in pain like I was!
